This assignment was really fun to learn on the technical side and play around with. I'm not much of an actor but the different footages I accumulated made it easy to become engaged in chroma-keying and imagining a speculative space in the comforts of my own home. It helped me to contextualize the different approaches current imaging communication technologies have utilized to transform one's space on a zoom chat and more.
I had difficultly at first because I learned through trial and error, that chroma-keying required solid colours, white light and an appropriately sized space to move around without breaking things. eg. hanging a sheet, getting into character. After re-doing the assignment, I could see more possibilities of what I could do with found footage and acting out silly roles.
Supporting Research
I thought about the different ways to contextualize chroma-keying into the everyday screen experience. I was reminded how instagram filters have catapulted to successes, where I cannot go a day without seeing some version of an instagram filter that uses face tracking.
I also researched about the various footage that people created to be chroma-keyed. This is a vintage find in terms of the recent chroma-key phase of zoom. But I remembered the infamous Filthy Frank on Youtube created some hilarious footage where you could use the footage to place the character in odd scenarios.
Ideation
At first I wanted to chroma key specific articles of clothing, but I didn't have the right lighting for it. I added more lights during the recording and I
changed the concept to be a question prompt
and prediction format. Then I had to act it out a couple of times to get the appropriate responses.
Scene 1: Question
This scene sets the scenario for a question prompt.
I created the prompt out of a text draw that is alpha masked with a foggy background for added effect.
Scene 2: Outcome Try #1
This scene sets the scenario for a future prediction based on the question prompt.
The options cycle in and out much like a fortuneteller's globe or a magic 8 ball.
I created the cycling answers out of youtube predictions footage
and which also get alpha masked in a similar manner with the fog.
Scene 2: Outcome Try #2
This scene sets the scenario for a future prediction based on the question prompt.
The options cycle in and out much like a fortuneteller's globe or a magic 8 ball.In this try,
I just paused my movie player actor in Isadora to land on a different prediction.
